Sin la pelota, tampoco tenía inconveniente en defender a diferentes alturas, siendo un central expeditivo y anticipador tanto en el bloque alto de Del Bosque, en el bloque medio de Luis Aragonés y en el bajo de Rafa Benítez, toda una garantía a la hora de adaptarse a cualquier contexto de partido.
Una de las claves de la adaptabilidad de Carlos Marchena fue su “gran disciplina táctica”, tal y como apunta el periodista Alberto Santamaría. Además, a su gran capacidad para interpretar las órdenes tácticas se le sumaba el hecho de que “era un futbolista que cometía muy pocos errores”. Su gran fiabilidad en la toma de decisiones era clave para evitar el error en contextos que no le eran tan favorables, puesto que evitaba que sus carencias salieran a relucir, permitiéndole rendir adecuadamente en distintos sistemas.
Carlos Marchena saboreó los primeros éxitos de su vida deportiva en el Valencia C.F. El conjunto de Mestalla, sobre todo en los inicios del Sevillano como valencianista, practicaba un fútbol rápido y vertical. Por aquel entonces, los blanquinegros eran un equipo “bronco y copero” que no mimaba ni tocaba el esférico en demasía, sino que intentaba llegar a la meta rival con los menores pases posibles en transiciones vertiginosas; basaba su juego ofensivo en el contragolpe. Todos los entrenadores que pasaron por Mestalla confiaron en Marchena, desde Benítez hasta Emery. Rindió a gran nivel con todos ellos e incluso el técnico vasco afirmó que entrenarle había sido “una satisfacción” y que pasaría a la historia del Valencia porque su carrera había sido «inmaculada», tal y como recogió Superdeporte en el año 2010. Marchena creció futbolísticamente con aquella idea de juego, una defensa que buscaba el pase vertical para enlazar el contragolpe y esperaba cerca del área la acometida rival.
Marchena debutó con España de la mano de Iñaki Saez, quien le definió como “una mezcla entre Beckenbauer y Ayala”, tal y como apareció en El Mundo en 2004. Por aquel entonces, el combinado nacional aún no había adoptado el estilo del tiki-taka. Sin embargo, con la llegada de Luis Aragonés a la Selección, Marchena tuvo que adaptarse a un fútbol que se encontraba en las antípodas de lo que el Valencia practicaba y lo hizo a las mil maravillas. ‘El Sabio de Hortaleza’, de hecho, se convirtió en uno de los máximos valedores del central sevillano. Aragonés depositó su confianza en Marchena y le sirvió de inspiración para dar lo mejor de sí a él y a toda la Selección en la Eurocopa de 2008, tal y como apareció en La Voz de Galicia en 2014: «Te quitaba los miedos. Entonces le teníamos respeto y temor a selecciones como Francia o Italia, se hablaba de la maldición de cuartos. Él te cogía en el vestuario y te decía: «Ustedes son mucho mejores que ellos. Si están al cien por cien y hacen lo que yo les diga, les ganamos seguro» y salías de allí pensando «joder, los vamos a barrer». Además, tal y como recoge la misma publicación, Aragonés tenía una conexión especial con Marchena y llegó a decirle: «Chaval, usted conmigo va a venir siempre. ¿Se piensa que este partido me importa? Yo a usted lo conozco y este partido no va a cambiar nada» antes de una cita a la que no pudo acudir.
Luis Aragonés le otorgó a Marchena un protagonismo enorme en la Eurocopa de 2008 pese al mal curso que había realizado el Valencia y el defensor de Las Cabezas de San Juan fue titular junto a Carles Puyol en el centro de la zaga. Aquella Selección practicaba un juego de toque y posesión que obligaba a la defensa a adelantar las líneas y a buscar mayormente el pase horizontal moviendo el balón con fluidez. El andaluz había jugado varios partidos de pivote defensivo a lo largo de su carrera, lo que fue un plus a la hora de adaptarse a la Selección. España acabó proclamándose campeona y el papel de Marchena fue reconocido por la UEFA, que le incluyó en el once ideal de la competición junto con David Villa.

El que fuera central del Valencia es, además, poseedor de un récord mundial a nivel de selecciones. Tal y como informó el periodista Alexis Martín-Tamayo a través de su cuenta de Twitter el día 19 de junio de 2016, el defensor andaluz encadenó la friolera cantidad de 57 partidos seguidos sin caer derrotado portando la zamarra de la Selección Española.
