La excepción a esta norma que se cumplía con severa regularidad en aquellos tiempos fue Juan Cruz Sol, quien defendió la elástica valencianista la mayor parte de su vida y, además, fue una de las piezas clave de la Selección Española durante muchos años. Su historia es la de un niño precoz que demostró a muy temprana edad una serie de cualidades que le llevaron a 600 kilómetros de casa, a un lugar que se convertiría en su nuevo hogar, para convertirse en un mito eterno.
La aventura de Juan Cruz Sol dio comienzo en la pequeña localidad guipuzcoana de Elgoibar. Allí, un jovencísimo jugador de pelota vasca destacaba con el balón en los pies jugando con sus amigos por pura diversión en la plaza de su pueblo. Tan inocente y pura razón para disfrutar del fútbol le llevó a ser fichado por el equipo de su pueblo, el Club Deportivo Elgoibar. Al poco de enrolarse en el modesto conjunto vasco, el ojeador del Valencia en Euskadi se percataría de sus cualidades diferenciales y lo llevaría a la entidad de Mestalla.
Su paso por la capital valenciana en dos etapas -de 1965 a 1975 y de 1980 a 1981- fue especialmente fructífero, y así lo atestigua una Liga, una Copa, una Recopa y una Supercopa de Europa. Siendo siempre piedra angular de la defensa valencianista, Sol también fue clave en el esquema de Alfredo di Stefano que ganó la Liga del 71 rompiendo la negativa racha de 24 años sin alzarse con el trofeo de la competición doméstica. La tercera etapa, no obstante, corresponde a su fichaje por el Real Madrid. Según cuenta el propio Sol en el programa 100 años, 100 historias dirigido por el periodista Fran Guaita, Santiago Bernabéu, presidente del club blanco por aquel entonces, llegó a decirle en persona que vestiría la elástica merengue, afirmación que posteriormente se cumpliría.
A pesar de dar sus primeras andaduras como interior sobre el césped de Mestalla, Sol acabaría retrasando su posición a la línea defensiva bajo las órdenes de Mundo, conservando una reminiscencia de aquella etapa en el centro del campo, su gran capacidad para incorporarse al ataque. De esta forma, aun tratándose de un futbolista eminentemente defensivo, Juan Sol también sabía incorporarse a las labores defensivas para, posteriormente, recuperar su posición de forma oportuna y dedicarse en plenitud a frenar a los atacantes rivales. Inexpugnable en la retaguardia, de potente físico y con un dominio total del espacio aéreo, tanto para atacar como para defender, el zaguero vasco fue llamado en diversas ocasiones a vestir la zamarra española tanto como jugador del Valencia como cuando formó parte del Real Madrid.
El equipo estaba ideado para jugar así porque teníamos dos laterales como Antón y Sol que subían muy bien por las bandas, lo que nos permitía llegar al área contraria a gran velocidad y con mucha gente, así no nos hacía falta jugar con un delantero de referencia
Juan Sol disputaría cuatro amistosos con la selección nacional antes de su primera cita oficial como zaguero de ‘La Roja’, que sería el primer partido clasificatorio de la Eurocopa de 1972 en la que España había quedado encuadrada en el Grupo 4 junto a Irlanda del Norte, la URSS y Chipre. Aquel primer encuentro sería frente al combinado británico, que en aquel entonces contaba con uno de los futbolistas más talentosos de la historia de este deporte, George Best. Sin embargo, ni el ‘quinto Beatle’ pudo aguarle el estreno al defensor valencianista, saliendo victoriosa la Selección Española por un contundente 3-0, aunque el defensor de Elgoibar fue cambiado a la media parte por el gaditano Hita, que debutaba aquella noche. Sol disputaría cinco de los seis partidos, saltándose el Chipre-España, que se antojaba como un puro trámite tras el 7-0 de la ida. Desgraciadamente, la derrota de España frente a la URSS en la segunda jornada lastró al equipo, y los soviéticos, que solo se dejaron puntos empatando frente a España en la vuelta y en un envite contra los norirlandeses, finalizaron primeros de grupo accediendo a la fase final del torneo.
Sol seguiría acudiendo con regularidad a representar a España y sería de nuevo seleccionado para disputar una Eurocopa, la de 1976, en la que España había sido encuadrada con Rumanía, Escocia y Dinamarca en la fase de grupos. Jugó cuatro de los seis partidos, cosechando dos victorias -ante Dinamarca y Escocia- y dos empates -ante Escocia y Rumanía- que, junto a los dos triunfos nacionales en los otros dos encuentros auparon a España ante la primera posición del grupo, siendo emparejada en cuartos de final con la Alemania Federal de Franz Beckembauer, donde también jugaba un futuro murciélago, Rainer Bonhof. Los españoles lograron un meritorio empate en casa ante la futura subcampeona del torneo, pero nada se pudo hacer en tierras germánicas donde los locales, liderados por ‘el kaiser’, vencieron 2-0 a ‘La Roja’, acabando con el sueño europeo.
Aquel 2-0 cerró su etapa en la selección, y tres años más tarde cerraría otra, su etapa como madridista, para volver al club de sus amores. Juan Sol, con la rodilla maltrecha por una fuerte lesión, quiso retirarse en el Valencia, y volvió a Mestalla para cumplir su sueño. Durante este periodo, añadiría la Recopa y la Supercopa de Europa a su palmarés como valencianista. Despidiéndose en 1981 de los terrenos de juego y del Valencia CF, volvería a ligarse a la entidad de Mestalla en 2013, cuando pasó a encargarse del área social del Consejo de Administración del club valencianista. La historia de Juan Sol es la de un niño precoz que comenzó a cosechar fama y éxito a temprana edad, que fue imprescindible en los equipos que jugó y que supo volver al club de su corazón para cerrar la etapa más bonita de su carrera. De esta forma, una de las grandes leyendas de la historia del Valencia C.F, y uno de los futbolistas con más lustre internacional de la década de los 70, puso punto y final a su carrera con el murciélago en el pecho.
