Mendieta volvió a deslumbrar a Europa
Cuando se habla de Gaizka Mendieta en la capital del Turia sobran las presentaciones. Como ídolo valencianista lideró al club hacia lo más alto conquistando una Copa del Rey y una Supercopa de España, además de alcanzar dos finales de Champions. Aunque su andadura con la Selección Española no fue igual de fructífera, siempre permanecerá en el recuerdo la Eurocopa del año 2000 disputada en Bélgica y Países Bajos en la que el centrocampista del Valencia C.F. firmó una actuación sobresaliente a pesar de no partir como titular al inicio del torneo.
Mendieta había debutado con la selección un año antes contra Austria el día de su 25 cumpleaños, el 27 de marzo de 1999 en el estadio de Mestalla. El regalo de aniversario aquel día fue su debut y un contundente 9-0 con el que ‘La Roja’ destrozó a los austriacos. Un halagüeño comienzo con España para un jugador que se encontraba en el cénit de su carrera y que no tardaría mucho en poder demostrarlo también con su selección. A nivel de clubes, aquel año llegó a la final de la Champions con el Valencia, y un año antes se proclamó campeón de la Copa del Rey, anotando en la final uno de los goles más hermosos que nadie haya convertido vistiendo la elástica valencianista.
La Selección Española llegaba al torneo tras clasificarse primera de grupo en la ronda preliminar con ocho puntos de ventaja respecto al segundo, tenía un gran equipo y la sensación de que podía hacer un papel importante en la competición. Guardiola, Raúl, Valerón o Fernando Hierro eran algunos de los nombres de más enjundia que componían el bloque de la selección nacional que quedó encuadrada en el Grupo C junto a Noruega, Eslovenia y la República Federal de Yugoslavia, compuesta por los actuales estados de Serbia y Montenegro.
Debut contra Noruega. Mendieta se gana la titularidad
Para el primer encuentro frente a Noruega, Camacho decidió no alinear a Mendieta en el once inicial, y ‘La Roja’ acabó firmando una presentación lamentable en el torneo. España era superior a los nórdicos sobre el papel, pero no cumplió con las expectativas sobre el césped del Feijenoord Stadion.
Durante la primera mitad, a pesar de tener el control de la pelota, las ocasiones a favor de ‘La Roja’ se sucedían a cuenta gotas, y en pocas ocasiones llegaban con peligro real a la meta defendida por Thomas Myhre. Noruega, por su parte, tampoco hacía alarde de una gran capacidad para crear peligro, pero sí lograron inquietar al guardameta español, José Molina, en un par de acercamientos al área.
La segunda parte sirvió con el público de Róterdam como el mejor de los somníferos, con dos equipos incapaces de hacerse daño mutuamente. En el minuto 66 llegaría el estimulante necesario para animar el encuentro, cuando un error grosero de Molina en una mala salida propiciaba el gol de los escandinavos y la futura titularidad de Cañizares con el combinado nacional. En el minuto 72, Camacho dio la orden y Mendieta saltó al campo para sustituir a la leyenda deportivista Fran González. El cambio de piezas mejoró al equipo y a los cuatro minutos el vasco gozó de una buena ocasión dentro del área que acabó con un posible penalti por derribo que no concedió el colegiado. Su entrada había aportado frescura, pero no hizo milagros ni pudo salvar a una España desdibujada. Sin embargo, Camacho ya había tomado nota de que aquel chico de melena rubia tenía que estar en el XI inicial.
Titular contra Eslovenia: Imprescindible en la victoria
Tras el tropiezo inicial contra Noruega, España no podía permitirse otro fallo y debía vencer para encauzar su rumbo con una victoria. Camacho decidió alinear esta vez a Mendieta desde el inicio, y la jugada le acabaría saliendo redonda.
El partido comenzó de la mejor de las formas para el combinado español, que se adelantó por mediación de Raúl a los cuatro minutos en una jugada iniciada por Mendieta. La Eslovenia de Zlatko Zahovič se había mostrado peligrosa en los metros finales pero débil atrás, y ‘La Roja’ logró aprovecharse de ello en los primeros minutos. Sin embargo, a pesar de dominar el esférico y las ocasiones, los españoles se marcharon al descanso venciendo por la mínima.
Con Gaizka Mendieta sobre el campo, España parecía otra. Fruto de las circunstancias o de la entrada del valencianista en el once inicial, la España falta de ideas que se vio en el primer envite contra Noruega se había convertido en un equipo que angustiaba al rival y creaba peligro con cada internada en el área. Sin embargo, a los 14 minutos de haber iniciado la segunda mitad, los eslavos consiguieron trenzar una gran juagada de ataque y sorprender a los españoles y empatar la contienda con el que era apenas su segundo disparo a puerta. Un minuto después de la tragedia, Mendieta cogió el balón desde el centro del campo, se zafó de un grupo de tres defensores, y evadió a un cuarto zaguero con un impresionante caño para asistir a Etxeberria y poner el 2-1 con el que finalizaría el encuentro. El valencianista, con aquella genialidad, despejó toda duda sobre su titularidad en ‘La Roja’, había resuelto un partido y había dado vida a España en el torneo.
Clave en la batalla contra Yugoslavia. Marca el gol del empate en el descuento
El tercer enfrentamiento de España en la Eurocopa resultaría ser uno de los partidos más frenéticos y emocionantes de toda la historia del combinado nacional y Mendieta iba a formar parte de él de forma protagonista. España necesitaba vencer para asegurar su presencia en cuartos de final y se vería las caras con la Yugoslavia del valencianista Miroslav Djukić, de Sinisa Mihajlović y Pedja Mijatović.
El encuentro comenzó agitado y frenético, con dos equipos que creaban peligro con cada llegada. Mihajlović tuvo dos disparos peligrosos que pasaron cerca de la meta de Cañizares para los balcánicos y Mendieta respondió con otros dos peligrosos lanzamientos a los pocos minutos. El combinado de Europa del Este comenzó mejor, pero España fue ganando metros conforme avanzaba el encuentro. El dominio no estaba claro, hasta que en el minuto 30 los yugoslavos dieron el primer golpe -aprovechando que Míchel Salgado había abandonado su posición- colgando un balón desde el lateral derecho que Milosević cabeceó al fondo de la red. España no agacharía la cabeza en ningún momento y ocho minutos más tarde Alfonso empataría la contienda tras aprovechar un pase de Raúl.
Aquel partido fue impresionante, Yugoslavia tenía un magnífico equipo y ambos conjuntos atacábamos mucho mejor que defendíamos, de ahí el resultado. Toda la mala suerte que tuvimos en el partido se dio la vuelta en los últimos minutos. Para mí fue un resultado justo pero que por circunstancias del juego no acabamos de ir por delante en el marcador hasta el descuento.
La primera parte había finalizado con empate a uno en un partido de auténtica locura, y la segunda mitad depararía más sorpresas. En un inicio frenético como el anterior, Govedarica pondría en ventaja a los eslavos en el 50 con un derechazo inapelable y, un minuto más tarde, Munitis volvería a poner el empate en el luminoso con un zurdazo a la escuadra. Yugoslavia se quedó con 10 futbolistas sobre el terreno de juego cuando Jokanović fue expulsado en la que era la tercera roja de los balcánicos en tres partidos de Eurocopa, pero, aun así, buscaron inquietar a Cañizares para ponerse de nuevo por delante. El duelo era una delicia para el espectador neutral y un auténtico suplicio para los españoles y los yugoslavos, que sabían que en cualquier momento su rival podía ponerse por delante. El marcador tardó un tiempo en moverse, hasta que Komljenović, en una jugada enrevesada llena de rebotes, cazó un rechace batiendo a Cañizares para poner el 3-2 en el marcador.
Cuando se llegó al minuto 90 la hinchada española se temía lo peor, y es que aquella derrota les dejaba fuera de la competición en detrimento de Noruega, debido a que el encuentro entre Eslovenia y los nórdicos había finalizado con empate a cero. El partido había adquirido tintes dramáticos cuando, en el minuto 93, Abelardo fue derribado dentro del área y el colegiado señaló penalti. En aquel momento, Mendieta cogió el esférico sin pensárselo dos veces y batió a Ivica Kralj haciendo alarde de su buen hacer desde los once metros. Aquel gol empataba el encuentro y rompía una mala racha del Valencia en la que ningún murciélago había logrado marcar en Mundial o Eurocopa desde hacía 18 años. Parecía estar todo el pescado vendido, pero aquella pena máxima anotada por el centrocampista del Valencia había dado alas a una selección que se envalentonó en el arreón final. De esta forma, en el minuto 95 de juego, un balón largo de Guardiola rechazado por una maraña de jugadores dentro del área, finalizaría con una bolea de Alfonso Pérez en el punto de penalti que supondría el 4-3 en el último segundo.
DATO: Con el gol a Yugoslavia, Mendieta acabó con una ominosa racha de 18 años sin que un jugador del Valencia C.F. marcase con la Selección Española. El último fue Enrique Saura precisamente contra el combinado Yugoslavo en el Mundial 82 en el estadio Luis Casanova
Gol y eliminación contra Francia. El penalti que pudo ser
España había logrado pasar primera en la fase de grupos y en cuartos debía enfrentarse a Francia, liderada por Zinédine Zidane. Los franceses partían como claros favoritos y tenían más potencial, pero ‘La Roja’ estaba segura de sus posibilidades, aunque tuvieran en frente a todo un elenco de estrellas como Henry, Deschamps, Djorkaeff, Vieira, Barthez o el mencionado Zidane.
Francia comenzó como un cohete, generando las primeras ocasiones de gol. Conforme el conjunto español comenzó a tener la posesión de la pelota, se asentó en el campo y generó peligro. España advirtió primero con una gran falta de Guardiola en una posición escorada que a punto estuvo de sorprender a Barthez, Raúl, poco después, casi logró anotar un disparo lejano que casi supera por alto al meta galo, y al minuto siguiente, en el 22’, Zidane cometió unas manos dentro del área que el colegiado no vio. Sería precisamente Zidane quien, diez minutos más tarde, ejecutaría un tiro libre con maestría alojando el esférico en la escuadra derecha de la portería defendida por Santi Cañizares. No duraría demasiado la alegría francesa, puesto que, en el 38, Munitis sería objeto de penalti, y Mendieta, como siempre, decidiría no fallar a su cita desde los once metros y batió a Barthez con la maestría que le caracterizaba. A un minuto del final del tiempo reglamentario, Djorkaeff pondría a los galos de nuevo en franquicia con un derechazo dentro del área imposible para el guardameta español.
Francia supo frenar los ataques españoles en la segunda mitad. Con ventaja en el marcador, los galos no se vieron forzados a arriesgar y los españoles no encontraban la manera de hacer daño. Mendieta fue sustituido por Urzaiz en el minuto 57, un cambio del que más tarde toda España se acordaría. ‘La Roja’ siguió intentándolo con más voluntad que acierto hasta que, en los instantes finales del encuentro, Abelardo fue objeto de penalti, como lo fuese ante Yugoslavia, dándole a España la oportunidad de seguir viva. Mendieta había abandonado el terreno de juego media hora antes, por lo que fue Raúl quien asumió la responsabilidad. El crack blanco intentó ajustar tanto el balón a la escuadra derecha que terminó por echarla fuera, desperdiciando en el 90 el regalo francés.
Con tan poco tiempo, España no logró anotar de nuevo y fue eliminada, Quedó, suspendida en el aire, la eterna pregunta: “¿Qué hubiese pasado si lo llega a lanzar Mendieta?”. El periodista de Superdeporte César Izquierdo cree que Mendieta “hubiese marcado el segundo penalti”, pero no sabe si España hubiese podido vencer a aquella Francia a la que cataloga como “fuerte, completa y muy ganadora”. Por otra parte, el periodista Alberto Santamaría cataloga al centrocampista como un “especialista” desde el punto de penalti y cree que “si Mendieta hubiese estado sobre el campo en aquel momento, seguramente no lo hubiese fallado”. Nunca podrá saberse si, de haber estado sobre el césped en la segunda pena máxima, Mendieta podría haber cambiado la historia de la Selección Española.
