Un todocampista de talla internacional
A lo largo del último siglo, por el Valencia han pasado una serie de futbolistas que han trascendido generaciones y que son venerados incluso por aquellos que no les vieron jugar. Muchas veces la distancia hace el olvido, pero en otros casos refuerza la figura de quiénes portando el murciélago en el pecho tallaron su nombre en las páginas de la historia. Entre los hombres cuyo legado les concede de perpetuidad el estatus de ases del valencianismo se encuentra, sin duda, Pep Claramunt.
El centrocampista de Puçol se retiró del fútbol a finales de la década de los 70, por lo que una parte muy importante de la afición no le pudo disfrutar en el campo y, sin embargo, conoce de sus hazañas. Pero más allá de los títulos conseguidos –y que devolvieron al Valencia a primera línea de combate-, Claramunt practicó un fútbol rompedor e incluso contracultural. A pesar de que la videoteca de su época sea más bien escasa; la hemeroteca, los historiadores, sus compañeros y el propio futbolista nos pueden acercar a elaborar una radiografía de su desempeño como jugador.
Para situar el análisis se puede trazar una línea imaginaria en su carrera que separa dos etapas: la pre-Di Stefano y la post-Di Stefano. Ambas fueron exitosas, ya que antes y después de tener al argentino como entrenador ganó títulos y fue internacional. El desglose, por tanto, responde a criterios más bien posicionales y de su rol tanto en el Valencia como en la Selección Española.
Más allá de los títulos conseguidos -y que devolvieron al Valencia C.F. a primera línea de combate-, Claramunt practicó un fútbol rompedor e incluso contracultural
En su primer lustro como futbolista nos encontramos con un Claramunt muy ofensivo y que se desempeñaba en posiciones de ataque. Las crónicas le retratan como un jugador con mucho desborde, de endiablada velocidad y muy peligroso atacando los espacios a la espalda de la defensa. Acostumbrado a jugar por banda –especialmente la derecha-, su capacidad de regate tanto hacia fuera como hacia dentro le hacían un atacante difícil de controlar y de intuir.
El propio jugador comenta en una entrevista realizada por este medio que la versatilidad y las ganas de triunfar marcaron sus inicios. Estos dos atributos le llevaron a combinar muchas posiciones en el campo para hacerse un hueco entre los mejores. Su gran actuación contra la Inglaterra de Charlton en Wembley –cuartos de final de la Eurocopa de 1968- ante 100.000 personas con apenas 22 años fueron buena muestra del ciclón que estaba por llegar.
Con la llegada de Alfredo Di Stefano al banquillo, la carrera de Claramunt da un paso más adelante. El preparador bonaerense ve en el valenciano al centrocampista ideal para armar el juego del equipo y decide centrar su posición. Actuando como ‘8’ explota todo su potencial, sumando la lectura de juego y la vocación asociativa a las características que le hicieron triunfar en posiciones adelantadas. “Di Stefano lo coloca como director de orquesta”, comenta el periodista e historiador valenciano Paco Lloret.
El propio Claramunt explica mejor que nadie el impacto de Di Stefano en su juego: “Alfredo me proporcionó gran libertad de movimientos para ejecutar mi manera de entender el fútbol, no me marcó una zona concreta, sino que me dejaba aparecer por todo el campo y moverme por donde quisiera. Eso me permitió entregarme y rendir mucho más. Fue el que mejor entendió mi fútbol y me ubicó en una posición en la que di un salto cualitativo importante dado que era un jugador con más participación en el juego. De hecho, el año que fuimos campeones me nombraron como el mejor jugador del campeonato”.
Así fue, el valencianista se convirtió en un todocampista, un jugador omnipresente con la libertad –y la capacidad física- para presionar, robar, lanzar ataques, conducir, asistir -71 asistencias registradas- y aparecer por zona de remate para marcar goles. A lo largo de su carrera marcó la friolera de 90 sin ser delantero, guarismos que retratan una capacidad de llegada. “Pepe era un genio en todo”, confesó Ricardo Arias en una entrevista en Superdeporte, además de reconocer que el de Puçol había sido siempre su ídolo.
Un adelantado a su tiempo
Su forma de jugar se asemejaba más a la que llegaría en los años 80, después del influjo de la Naranja Mecánica, que a la propia de finales de los 60 y principios de los 70. Claramunt fue un adelantado a su tiempo hasta el punto que muchos consideran que por condiciones tendría cabida en el fútbol actual. “Jugaría hasta en el siglo 24 porque era un jugador espectacular”, explica Paco Lloret. En la misma línea se expresaba su compañero Juan Cruz Sol en una entrevista en el diario Levante EMV: “Habría sido hoy un crack absoluto”.
Sobre esta cuestión responde también el propio jugador: “Creo que sí que jugaría en el fútbol actual, porque tenía cambio de ritmo, velocidad, desborde, me iba muy bien en el uno contra uno por las dos bandas. Sobre todo porque en mi época ya buscaba el juego de conjunto, tirar paredes… Jugar al fútbol de una manera parecida a la que se está interpretando hoy en día”.

Haciendo un ejercicio de fútbol-ficción, pero a tenor del perfil descrito y de sus aptitudes futbolísticas, el estilo de Claramunt se podría comparar –con las evidentes diferencias tácticas del fútbol actual- a lo que hoy se conoce como ‘box-to-box’ y que José Mourinho definió de la siguiente manera: “Para mí, ser un ‘box-to-box’ significa ser bueno en un área y en el otro área. Significa defender bien en un lado y tener la condición física y la resistencia de llegar al otro, donde debes ser bueno marcando o creando”.
Gen ganador y valencianista
Capitán tanto del Valencia como de la Selección, su carácter ganador fue una de las claves que le llevó a alcanzar éxito. Quizás el mejor reflejo de esa mentalidad ambiciosa fue quedarse toda su carrera en la entidad de Mestalla con la intención de llevarla al máximo nivel. “Mi ilusión era hacer un Valencia más grande, que estuviéramos a la altura del Madrid o el Barcelona y pelearles los títulos”, atestigua el jugador que marcó una época y que se convirtió en el ídolo de una generación que todavía le tiene en la boca cada vez que recrea sus efemérides como valencianista.
